Solid Foamer (Soap Stick) for Water Removal from Gas Wells – A100

Accepta Soap Sticks comprise a high performance, chemical foamer manufactured in a convenient solid stick form, developed to remove water from gas wells and increase gas production.

Accepta Soap Sticks are scientifically formulated using 100% active surfactants, friction reducer and foam stabiliser in water-soluble tubes.  Natural gas bubbling through the water column and 100% active ingredients produces foam which can help remove water from “watered-up” gas wells.

Application Areas for Soap Sticks

Accepta Soap Sticks are primarily used to remove water from gas wells and increase gas production.

The foaming action of the Accepta’s Soap Sticks decreases the hydrostatic back-pressure which increases gas production that further enhances the foaming action until the well unloads.

Accepta Soap Stick A100 can be used to remove condensate and water from gas condensate wells and flowing oil wells.  For wells with more than 75% condensate, it is recommended to use Accepta’s range of Oil Sticks.

Product Benefits

  • Aids water removal from gas wells and increases gas production.
  • High temperature stable. Develops stable foam in high temperature deep gas wells. Laboratory tests indicate that a stable foam can be developed at 100oC (212oF) and above.  For extremely high temperature wells the Accepta formulation can be altered.
  • Cost effective alternative for removal of water from gas wells, without using expensive well service operations such as swabbing, jetting with coiled tubing, or installing artificial lift and siphon strings.
  • Highly concentrated, contains 100% active foamer in a water soluble tube that can produce up to four times more foam than some other, commercially available sticks.
  • Completely water soluble, the entire Soapstick (tube, caps, and contents) are water soluble leaving no unused component parts.
  • Easy to use, sticks are shipped ready-to-use and will not dissolve while in cool, dry storage.

Product Properties

Form: Solid stick, cylindrical
Colour: Off-white, cream
Odour: Very slight ammonia
Specific gravity: 1.16
Melting point: 51.5oC (125oF)
pH: 6.5-8.0
Solubility in water: Soluble
Dissolution: Normally dissolves in 30 to 90 minutes depending on temperature, salt content, and relative water motion.
The soap-stick will dissolve in water in wells with BHT below 51.5oC (125oF) (just at a slower rate).
Laboratory tests indicate (tube & contents) will dissolve in 90 minutes @ 37.8oC (100oF), 62 minutes @ 48.9oC (120oF), 45 minutes @ 60.5oC (140oF), and 30 minutes @ 82.2oC (180oF).
Falling rate through fresh water: Approximately 30m per minute.
The stick can free fall (though air) 915m in about 15 seconds.
Gas moving up tubing will often change falling characteristics.

Application & Dosage Information

The number of Accepta Soap Sticks used is based on the volume of water above the perforations.  Field tests indicate that the best results were achieved by using a larger initial slug treatment of 0.125 to 0.25% by weight of Soap Stick A100 to water above the perforations.  A treatment of 0.125 to 0.25% by weight would require 0.2kg to 0.4kg of stick per BBL of water.

Sizes SoapSticks per BBL (Initial Treatment)
1 ¼” x 18” 0.5 to 1 Stick per 1 BBL of water
1 ¼” x 15” 1 to 2 Sticks per 1 BBL of water
3/4” x 15” 2 to 4 Sticks per 1 BBL of water

Note: The above amount is recommended for an initial slug treatment.  In many cases, removing the top few hundred feet of fluid may be sufficient to allow the production of natural gas to blow out the remaining fluid in the well.

To determine the optimum amount for periodic treatments you may choose to gradually reduce the initial treatment amount until the most economical point is reached.  Periodic treatments with Accepta Soap Stick A100 may be necessary to prevent production decline due to the gradual water build-up.

It is much easier to maintain gas production with regular insertion of Accepta Soap Stick A100’s than it is to kick off a dead well.  Gas bubbling though water is necessary to create foam.  If a well is totally dead, Accepta gas sticks may be used in conjunction with
Accepta super foam sticks to provide agitation energy.

The most common procedure is to shut-in the well and drop Accepta Soap Sticks through a lubricator.  Wait 30 minutes until the sticks dissolve then slowly return the well to normal production.  Repeat procedure if or when it becomes necessary.

For high rate wells (after Soapsticks have dissolved) flow well at about 25% of pre-treatment rate for about 30 minutes or until foam reaches surface then return to normal rate.

For shallow or low rate wells leave well flowing while dropping Soapsticks.

The estimated hydrostatic back-pressure reduction for each BBL of water removed (for various tubing sizes) is shown below: (Based on .43 PSI per foot of depth)

2 3/8” 100   PSI reduction for 1 BBL of water removed
2 7/8” 75   PSI reduction for 1 BBL of water removed
3 ½” 50   PSI reduction for 1 BBL of water removed

It is advisable to carry out a ‘Control Of Substances Hazardous to Health’ (COSHH) assessment before use.
